Flagyl is a brand-name prescription antimicrobial used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin. Extended-release metronidazole is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis.
As an antimicrobial, Flagyl cannot be used to treat viral infections. If Flagyl is being used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (like trichomoniasis), both sex partners should use the medication simultaneously. This helps reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner. Antimicrobials stop the growth of harmful microorganisms in the body, so simultaneous use in both partners of metronidazole will help prevent the infection from living on and being passed between partners.
Flagyl is supplied as an oral tablet or extended-release capsule. It contains the drug metronidazole, which is available in generic form. Flagyl is only available via prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.
What is Metronidazole? Metronidazole is a prescription medication that is thought to be used to treat a wide variety of infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and certain types of certain eye infections. Metronidazole is available by many brand-name manufacturers and by generic or oral formulations.Metronidazole is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including but not limited to otitis media, sinusitis, and urinary tract infections.
Metronidazole is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted infections (like trichomoniasis).
In 1991, a study began to find out if the drug metronidazole was associated with an increased risk of bacterial enterocolitis. Researchers discovered that the drug increased the risk of developing intestinal pseudotumour of the small intestine and the small bowel. In 1998, the FDA approved metronidazole as a treatment for bacterial enterocolitis. FDA approval came as a shock to the community practice of giving the drug to a pregnant woman to prevent the development of disease.
Enter the complicated, dangerous world of bacterial diarrhea. Doctors give the antibiotic metronidazole to treat bacterial infections in people with weakened immune systems, chronic constipation, and severe diarrhea. Doctors also give the antibiotic vancomycin to treat resistant infections.

A doctor can prescribe metronidazole because it is often used off-label to treat bacterial infections. However, the FDA has not approved it for this purpose. The use of metronidazole in the treatment of bacterial infections without a doctor’s prescription may lead to treatment failure and complications.
In the 1990s, researchers began to find out if the drug metronidazole could treat urinary tract infections. Scientists were able to find out if metronidazole could treat bacterial infections like trichomoniasis, which is caused by an Escherichia coli that fights bacteria.
Research was started to find out if metronidazole could treat viral infections like the flu and common cold. While studies showed that metronidazole was effective against viral infections such as the flu and common cold, it wasn’t effective against bacterial infections like urinary tract infections.
